5th Annual Avenida de Altares at the Mexican Heritage Plaza
A Cultural Celebration of Día de Los Muertos
The Mexican Heritage Plaza (La Plaza) proudly presents the 5th Annual Avenida de Altares (Avenue of the Altars), a free, immersive and uniquely San Jose cultural event celebrating Día de Los Muertos (Day of the Dead). This beloved community tradition invites families and visitors to honor ancestors, experience rich Mexican traditions, and celebrate life through art, music, and food.
This year, Avenida de Altares continues La Plaza’s 25th-anniversary celebration, offering an unforgettable experience that stretches from the intersection of Alum Rock Avenue and King Road to the Mexico Bakery. The heart of the event is the carefully curated altar walk, featuring altars created by local artists and community groups. These vibrant altars, displayed along Alum Rock Avenue and within La Plaza’s grounds, provide a stunning tribute to those who have passed, inviting reflection on the beauty and meaning of Día de Los Muertos.
Once you’ve explored Avenida de Altares, step into La Plaza’s festive grounds for an array of activities that embody the spirit of the celebration. From tarot readings to local artisans selling unique handmade creations, there’s something for everyone. Visitors will also find picturesque cemetery installations, offering beautiful decor and perfect photo opportunities to honor the tradition of remembering loved ones with reverence and joy.
